Moving Day Preparation

How to Prepare for Your Movers

A complete checklist to ensure your move goes smoothly and efficiently when the movers arrive.

Book Your Move

One Week Before Moving Day

  • Confirm your moving date and time with the moving company
  • Finish packing all boxes except essentials
  • Label all boxes with room name and contents
  • Disassemble furniture that needs to come apart (or arrange for movers to do it)
  • Measure doorways and furniture to ensure everything fits
  • Arrange parking for the moving truck (check permit requirements)

The Night Before

  • Pack an essentials box: Toiletries, medications, phone chargers, change of clothes, important documents, snacks
  • Empty and defrost refrigerator/freezer (clean and dry it)
  • Disconnect electronics and wrap cords (take photos of setup first)
  • Set aside items you're moving yourself (valuables, important documents, jewelry)
  • Prepare payment (cash, check, or card as agreed)
  • Get a good night's sleep! Moving day is physically demanding

Moving Day Morning

  • Wake up early and eat a good breakfast
  • Do final walkthrough - check all rooms, closets, cabinets, attic, basement, garage
  • Clear pathways - remove obstacles from doorways, hallways, and stairs
  • Protect floors - lay down cardboard or plastic in high-traffic areas
  • Secure pets and children - keep them in a safe room or with a friend/family
  • Have your phone charged and easily accessible

When Movers Arrive

  • Greet the movers and show them around
  • Point out fragile items and any special handling needs
  • Show items that aren't being moved (clearly mark or move to separate area)
  • Discuss parking and access at both locations
  • Stay available to answer questions but stay out of the way
  • Provide water/refreshments if it's a hot day (optional but appreciated)

What NOT to Pack for Movers

Movers cannot transport these items for safety and legal reasons:

  • Hazardous materials (paint, chemicals, propane, gasoline)
  • Perishable food items
  • Plants (may be restricted by state laws)
  • Valuables (jewelry, cash, important documents)
  • Firearms and ammunition
  • Pets

Transport these items yourself in your personal vehicle.

At Your New Home

  • Be present to direct furniture placement
  • Have a floor plan ready - know where each piece of furniture goes
  • Check items as they're unloaded - note any damage immediately
  • Count boxes - make sure everything arrived
  • Test furniture reassembly - make sure everything is stable
  • Provide final payment and tip if service was excellent

Pro Tips for a Smooth Move

Communication is Key

Stay in communication with your movers. If you have concerns or questions, speak up. Good movers want you to be satisfied with their service.

Be Flexible

Sometimes unexpected challenges arise (tight doorways, parking issues). Stay calm and work with your movers to find solutions.

Hydrate & Take Breaks

Moving day is exhausting. Keep water handy, take breaks when needed, and don't try to do everything yourself.

Document Everything

Take photos of valuable items before and after the move. Keep all paperwork and receipts in case you need to file a claim.
